An online version of Raketu Communications’ desktop VoIP software is to be launched, the New York-based firm has announced.
RakWeb will offer a variety of features including VoIP, IM, global SMS and video on demand, among others, and will enable SMEs to make cheap VoIP calls from any computer.
Speaking to Computer Business Review, chief executive Greg Parker said that RakWeb would be more secure than Skype, which uses super nodes:
“There’s the potential for denial-of-service attacks and viruses. We’re starting to see some of that to some degree with Skype…with hackers getting into their super nodes.”
Raketu’s desktop VoIP application, Launchpad, has proved extremely popular, with 1.5 million downloads since its October 2006 launch.
Mr Parker added that RakWeb would provide better value VoIP for SMEs:
“In a lot of cases we’re half the price of Skype, particularly for overseas calling and even in the US….because we make much less use of the whole server infrastructure and we don’t use a super-noding architecture, we have the lowest infrastructure cost among our peers.”
The new application will also allow bosses of SMEs to customise their version of RakWeb and prevent staff from accessing certain features.
