Breakthrough broadband network launched

SOUTH Australia’s universities, TAFE colleges and major research institutes will be linked through the nation’s first broadband internet network, enabling vast amounts of data to be transferred.

“Federal Education Minister Julie Bishop yesterday launched the $7.5 million South Australian Broadband Research and Education Network in Adelaide, which involved laying an ultra high speed, high volume fibre optic network capable of carrying up to 10 gigabits per second.

“The system will carry data at speeds 20,000 times faster than home broadband connections.

“This SABRENet will link South Australian research institutions, universities and wherever it is linked into a national and international network, so as its business grows in South Australia it will take greater national significance,” Ms Bishop said.

“South Australian Premier Mike Rann said the system was the first of its kind in the nation, linking 27 institutions and allowing the carriage of data _ including bioscience research and complex medical information such as the analysis of molecular structures _ via the network rather than through hard disc storage physically carried from site to site.

“SABRENet has been created as a result of a collaboration between the University of South Australia, Flinders University and Adelaide University, the federal and Rann governments and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation.

“Mr Rann said the system would help boost the defence industry and would reinforce the state’s position as an education hub.”
