Got Voice-Over IP?

Filed under: Voip — VOIP @ 7:35 pm

Do you even know what it is?

Here are the benefits, and drawbacks on cool new phones that run on Voice over IP.

You may have heard of Voice over IP, or VoIP, — phone service over the Internet. But, have you really looked at the benefits and drawbacks of signing up for the service?

“It’s a little bit cheaper and it’s a lot better,” said Brooke Shultz is spokeswoman for Vonage, one of several companies offering voice over IP service.

“$25 for unlimited calling throughout the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico,” Shultz said.

But, to use Voice over IP, you’ve got to have a special phone, like the ones Linksys makes.

“One of them is for your in-home use, it is a cordless handset that can also connect to your regular phone line,” said Eric Demming is product marketing manager at Linksys.

The other phone is a bit more like a cell phone.

“A Wi-Fi enabled phone that you can actually go mobile with, so you can walk to any hot spot,” Demming said.

Belkin makes a similar Wi-Fi phone.

But you do have to be careful when looking at Voice over IP providers. Features vary greatly and some don’t offer 911 service.

Cisco VOIP, presence servers vulnerable to new attacks

Filed under: Voip — VOIP @ 5:26 pm

Cisco this week said its corporate VoIP and presence servers could be attacked remotely and flooded with specific types of traffic intended to crash these systems.
The Cisco Unified CallManager (CUCM) and Cisco Unified Presence Server (CUPS) are vulnerable to remote attacks by specially crafted TCP, Internet Control Messaging Protocol (ICMP) or User Datagram Protocol (UDP) packets. Cisco has released software patches for these problems.
CallManager servers, which process VOIP calls on a network, can be crashed by sending attack traffic to TCP ports 2000 or 2443 to the server; these ports are used by Cisco’s proprietary call control protocols — Skinny Call Control Protocol (SCCP, or “Skinny”) and Secure SCCP. This vulnerability exists in CallManager versions 3.x, 4.x and 5.0 (CUCM 6.0, the latest version (announced this month), is not affected, nor is the Presence Server).
Cisco says CallManager and the Presence Server are affected by attacks involving floods of ICMP Echo Requests (pings), or specially crafted UDP packets. The ping-flood vulnerability, which affects only CallManager 5.0 and Presence Server 1.x, could be used to crash call-processing or presence services on the respective servers.

US Households Take VoIP Tel Services Onboard

Filed under: Voip — VOIP @ 5:25 pm

Currently 9% of US households now use a VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephone service with figures predicted to rise rapidly, according to a survey.

Cable operators are driving growth in the US residential Voice over Internet VoIP telephone market, according to market research company In-Stat.

More than 10.6 million US households now have at least one active VoIP user, up from approximately 9 million households at the end of Q3, according to In-Stat. The emergence of the cable operators as a dominant market force seems to have slowed the growth of the client-based VoIP market, with only Skype showing gains in this segment during the 4th Quarter.

More than 61 % of active residential VoIP users reported that they had discontinued or replaced a traditional (non- VoIP) phone service when they got their VoIP service, including a huge 76 % of those who use only a network/ATA-based service like those offered by the cable companies or Vonage.

The ability to bypass international tolls continues to be a big driver of client-based VoIP services, with users of client-based VoIP services reporting that 52 % of their VoIP calls are international long distance while network/ATA-based VoIP users report only 6 % of their calls are international long distance.

Search engine ranking

Filed under: Reviews — VOIP @ 5:27 pm

If you are a webmaster you would already know that the most important factor which seperates a successful website from an unsuccessful one is search engine ranking of the keyword a webmaster targets. There are many other ways to get traffic to your site namely pay per click advertising, hard links on other websites, e-mail marketing, word of mouth and cpm and cpa advertising but all these methods put together only make less then 30% of the total search engine traffic hence make search engine optimisation a must for every website if it wants to see some success.

There are a very few good companies which offer very good search engine ranking services and one of them is customermagnetism.com and they provide quotes for various aspects of search engine optimisation and cater to different needs of thier clients.

Wireless Industry News Story

Filed under: Reviews — VOIP @ 12:39 am

You must all have heard or read about InPhonic in one way or the other and must have seen thier website wirefly.com which is the largest online cell phone seller in terms of volume and inventory as well as stated in this wireless industry news story.Inphonic was again in the news recently with the whole of the industry talking about Iphonic’s future plans.Iphonic is the centre of wireless news at the moment and as it is a company which is listed in stock exchanges, the talk is that it is highly undervalued given the fact that online sales are set to go up in time to come.

In my opinion online cell phones sales will go up in time to come and there are a number of reasons for this,Firstly cell phone sales dont have a huge margin and to cover the rents of properties rented on high streets, cell phone stores artifically inflate the prices to cover up thier expenses and pay thier staff.Wirefly.com on the other hand has none of these disadvantages as they sell mobile phones online and dont have to pay huge amounts of money to rent shops and nor do they employ people for the shops as they dont have any.The bottom line is that wirefly.com doesnt incur all those heavy costs so they pass on the benefit to thier customers who end up paying very less prices as compared to buying the same phone and calling plan from a high street shop.Under the leadership of John Sculley of pepsi and Apple fame Iphone with its website wirefly.com is all set to capture the market in the comming days.

Walt Disney to test out interactive chat feature on ABC Family Channel

Filed under: News And Reviews — VOIP @ 12:27 am

Entertainment media industry giant Walt Disney has said that they would soon start testing a “watch-and-chat” feature on their ABC Family Channel Web site.

This new feature edition would let the members to watch TV shows on the Internet and chat about them at the same time.

Interestingly, the company was the first one of the major television studios to offer free streaming videos of its prime-time shows on the Web. Now, they plan to enhance the service by adding social networking features.

Paul Lee, president of ABC Family Channel said in a statement that they have chosen their series Wildfire for this test as its audience of predominantly 14- to 28-year-old females is “the most passionate audience of any show on the network.”

He added: “There is a new generation here …. They are changing the way people watch TV or use other technology. When you link (social networking) to TV programming, it’s almost like word of mouth on steroids.”

TV Guide for Internet Video

Filed under: Information Technology — VOIP @ 12:27 am

Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. has announced that they are currently developing a test version of their guide for internet video. They aim to release this test version sometime next month.

This engine would allow web users to keep track of clips and full episodes of TV shows now being posted on the Web.

The final version of such a service is expected to be launched later this year in September. The company has no plans to include homemade videos in such a listing as they plan to concentrate on about 60 Web sites from major networks such as ABC and Fox and other video portals such as AOL and Google. They would list network and original programming produced by major media companies.

Richard Cusick, senior vice president of digital media at Gemstar-TV Guide spoke on this new initiative: “Everybody says, ‘Who’s going to be the TV Guide of online video?’ and we say, why shouldn’t it be us? We’re making a bet, but we think it’s a safe bet and consistent with our mission.”

They plan to make revenues from online advertising and licensing the engine to other companies. Rob Enderle, a technology analyst spoke on this development: “If they don’t want to become obsolete, they have to get into the search business. Today, TV Guide can be better. But fast-forward two years from now, and you wonder if TV Guide has the resources to compete with Google long term.”

There are two main places where you can purchase your phone from either the shops or online.
